Early last week, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram’s parent company, Meta, launched a new product – Threads app.
It is already popular, as five million users signed up in its first 4 hours. By Thursday morning, the app had 30 million users – that makes Threads the fastest downloaded app in history.
Analytics firm Similarweb thinks that within two months, it will surpass 100 million users, a goal matched only by ChatGPT.
“This is as good of a start as we could have hoped for! Feels like the beginning of something special” Mr. Zuckerberg, the head of Meta company, said in a post on Threads.
The new Meta’s app allows users to create text-based posts (up to 500 characters), share photos and videos (up to 5 minutes long), and has a similar interface to Twitter.
Users sign up through their Instagram accounts and keep the same username, password and account name. In doing so, people can edit their bio, making it more exclusive.
They can also import a list of accounts directly from Instagram – that makes the app much easier to use. By the way, some celebrities like Bill Gates, Shakira and Oprah Winfrey have already joined new app and started posting.
An option to deactivate Threads account is available, but to remove the account completely, a user must delete an Instagram account, according to Meta’s “Threads Supplemental Privacy Policy”.
After people complained about this, head of Instagram Adam Mosseri announced “Threads is looking into a way to delete accounts separately from Instagram”.
According to the Meta company, Threads is available in 100 countries and more than 30 languages via Apple’s iOS and Android.
And users can post 500 characters in a single message in the app. Images, videos up to five minutes in length, and GIFs are supported in a message.
The app supports up to 10 media elements in a single message.
A regular Twitter user will notice the obvious similarities between the two apps. They both have a news feed, heart symbols that allow you to “like” other people’s content, and the ability to make reposts.
However, some of the terms have been changed: retweets are called “reposts” and tweets are called “topics”. Nevertheless, Twitter filed a lawsuit against Meta less than 24 hours after Threads launch. In a letter to Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter attorney Alex Spiro accused the company of exploiting its trade secrets.
According to statista, Twitter’s audience already accounted for over 368 million monthly active users worldwide. It’s a favorite platform of many people, which has a nice interface and a lot of helpful tools.
Elon Musk has been significantly changing the platform’s rules lately, but even the most loyal Twitter users don’t like it. For example, Musk recently introduced a limit on the number of tweets viewed per day.
Besides, one of the key advantages Threads has over Twitter is that Threads has a character limit of 500, while Twitter has 280. This multimedia feature gives Meta’s app users much space for self-expression.
Threads collects geolocation data, search history, address book contacts and other information about the user. Additionally, the app hasn’t been launched in European regions yet, as the EU hasn’t approved it because of strict data privacy rules.
